Photo: Steve Schmidt on his way to a 6th-place finish in the London Marathon in the 60-64 age division.
Steve Schmidt, who Geezer Jock has followed since the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships in July, finished sixth last Sunday in the London Marathon in the 60-64 age group. He ran 2:52:52 and was "pleased" with the time.
Some of us would be overjoyed. After all, this wasn't any marathon.
The London Marathon was designated the World Age Group Championship, which means of all the long-distance runners in the world, and there are many, Steve was in the top 10 for ages 60-64.
Wow!
It has been a terrific year for Schmidt, who is retired from the Justice Department and lives in Michigan.
He won the 5K and 10K in Lexington, Ky., at the USATF Masters Outdoors and he was first in his age group at the Detroit and Chicago Marathons.
Here is the story on Steve from Geezer Jock. You want to get into distance running? Start here and learn from a master.

This being the season for Marathons, the Wall Street Journal had a story today on injuries and marathons. Unlike Geezer Jock, there is a paywall for WSJ, but here is the link. I suppose many of you already subscribe.
The big takeaway? You got it. Overuse is an issue. There is also a caution for first-time marathoners. They are more likely to get hurt.
