What obstacle do you need to overcome to accomplish your goal in the coming year?
"Just to keep on keeping on – we use regular strength training and consistent swim, bike, and run training to hold off the inevitable, but we do feel the gradual loss of both muscle and flexibility.
"Our next A-race is Challenge Roth, a full-length triathlon in Germany, and it has a 15-hour cutoff time (as compared to 17 hours for most Ironman races).
This is dangerously close to our past Ironman finish times so there is no room for slowing down. The challenge of taking on a race when we don’t know if we can do it has an interesting “fear factor” that is especially motivating."
What's something you have to do regularly that's harder than most people realize?
"For daily training, it’s not necessary to be consistently great, but you do have to be great at being consistent.
"On race day, during 13-15 hours of suffering through a full Ironman, there will be dark spells where your entire body screams, “Why are you doing this to me? STOP NOW!” You have to plan for this, “embrace the suck”, and keep running!"
What is the biggest benefit of having a training partner?
"Training with friends is more fun, and race-cations are fantastic.
2. If one of us is dragging and reluctant to go out, the other one (sometimes) says, “come on, let’s do this!' ”
What is the key to getting the most benefit out of training partner?
"Find a partner that you enjoy who has similar abilities, speed, and goals. It’s ideal for me to be slightly slower than my partner (wife), so I must constantly push myself to keep up."
What's the best way to ruin the relationship and how to avoid it?
"By pressing your partner to do more than they want! Rest days are a necessity and don’t always happen on the scheduled day. When either of you is tired or grumpy, take a break!"
