John Weeks turned 62 yesterday, the 24th, which is decades into his fight with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS). The disease 50-60 years ago, before medicine caught up with it, shortened life expectancy.
Weeks discovered some treatment and has turned it into a chronic disease.
It is amazing what this man, who I first wrote about last November, has done facing down CCHS.
John is still crossing things off a bucket list, which is why I bring him back to Geezer Jock today.
In January, Weeks ran underground, a first for him. He’s not a groundhog, but he did do the GroundHog Run (5k and 10k) in a cool place called SubTropolis in Kansas City. It was a limestone mine on the banks on the Missouri River and the event benefits Ability KC.
“Running underground was on my bucket list for a long time, so it was fun to actually get a chance to do it,” John said.
The New Hampshire marathon qualified him for the Boston Marathon.
John has run six half-marathons in 2024, including a snowshoe half marathon, which is part of the National Snowshoe Championships.
Except…there was no snow in Eau Claire, Wisc. Feb. 9-11.
It ended up being a trail race. Weeks covered the course in a decent (for him) 2 hours, 9 minutes, but he was running with a lot of high school and college cross country athletes. There were very few older runners (60+), which means John had little competition and earned something special.
He is a national champion for that age group!
“Sometimes, all that matters is showing up,” Weeks said.
We know by now. The man sure knows how to show up.
Here is another link to the story on John from last November. If you need some inspiration to get moving today, read this.
