These are interesting tidbits to look at
1. Which sport will draw the most athletes in Pittsburgh?
Courtesy of Del Moon of the National Senior Games, we have some demographics on the games, which start July 7.
It will be a gang of people: 11,576 athletes. That does not include spouses, friends, and children. The city should be welcoming with all those visitors and their disposable income.
Pickleball is the biggest draw with 1,601 athletes registered followed by track & field with 1,490 and volleyball 1,285. Softball, which had its nationals earlier in Columbus, Ohio, drew 1,567.
The states with the most competitors is not surprising. Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
The largest age demographic is 2,414 for 65-69. And this will get your attention: 101 athletes have registered for the 90-100 year old group.
Male-Female participation? It's close, 51 percent male.
2. Yes, here's another scientific study to pay attention to.
From John Bejakovic at Long Youthspan here is a story/study about the benefits of resistance training for skin tone.
It was done in Japan and they can teach us a thing or two about healthy living.
3. Older folks make better customers
Jay Croft, the boss of Prime Fit Content, passed on this observation from the Functional Aging Summit. One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Melissa Grill-Petersen, said most fitness marketing is aimed at people 18 to 34, even though HALF OF THEM CANCEL their memberships within six months. “Older” adults make better, longer-lasting, higher-paying clients. Period.
