1. From San Francisco to New York in 47 days
Ok, she's 45 years old, about 15 years under the Geezer Jock threshold. Still Jenny Hoffman deserves a place here because she jogged 65 miles a day. The Harvard scientist ran coast-to-coast in the fastest known time (3,037 miles in 47 days, 12 hours, and 35 minutes).
2. Why are tennis stars winning as they age?
The idea for this item came from Long Youthspan, which wrote about the world's best tennis player, Novak Djokovic, who won the year-ending ATP Finals. Djokovic, 36, became the oldest man ever to finish the year as the No. 1 tennis player in the world.
Why?
This story in Long Island Tennis magazine by a professional teacher explains some of it.
This is a revealing segment in the story, which should add some confidence to the Geezer Jocks among you who hit regularly.
"A senior player knows how to use the slice and change the depth and direction of his or her shots, and often knows how to naturally move forward. When it gets tight, they are able to play within his or her self and are not looking to get on the highlight reel, but choose to hit the ball into the court. The shot selection is more often the right one, and it comes more naturally through the experience."
3. Go heavy? A blog argues for masters to lift even more.
"No amount of swimming, cycling, or running will help preserve fast-twitch fibers, because endurance activities generally don’t provide sufficient load for that type of muscle adaptation. Instead of doubling down on the long slow distance (LSD), Dr. Stacy Sims suggests LHS (“lifting heavy sh**t”) as you age to preserve muscle mass. This means exercises like deadlift, squats, leg press, seated or bent-over rows, with a heavy (for you) load and a low number of repetitions."
You can hurt yourself, yes you can. Here is the link to this aging hack, which will give you something to think about. Many of Geezer Jock readers understand the benefits of lifting, but this article seems to go further.
