Myrle Mensey refuses to be a captive of age. We are handed down this reality and she will not yield to it.
Myrle, and others like her, are why Geezer Jock is here, which is to show possibilities.
Last week in Sacramento, Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4, Mensey, 75, was not captive, but captivating. It was so hot race officials had to sprinkle water on the track so sprinters could put their fingertips on the track and Mensey still set two world records and an American record.
On Friday, Myrle got off a 41.25 meter heave in the hammer. It was more than ten meters further than any American woman in her division had ever thrown. It was also a world record. Germany's Eva Nohl tried to catch Myrle a day later, but came up with 40.83.
On Saturday, Day 3, Mensey threw the shot 9.42 meters, which beat the previous American record by .16m.
On Sunday, Day 4, Myrle went 16.24 meters in the weight throw demolishing the previous American record of 12.03m and world record of 14.74m.
For the record here is her resume from www.mastersrankings.com.
I asked her to explain herself.
"I train hard and I'm in the best physical condition ever, or at least in the past 10 years," Myrle said. "I also listen to my body and rest more, if needed."
Then I asked for a quick peek at her training regimen. This is it.
The foundation, she said, is nutrition, training, recovery, rest, and daily functional exercises.
Cardio once a week (Monday). Strength training is twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday.
There is light strength training and throw shot with trainer on Friday.
She works with a throws coach on Wednesday and throws alone on Saturday.
Sunday is rest.
Mensey has a team of professionals, who include a personal trainer twice a week, a sport medicine doctor once a week in season, and a massage therapist/ RN, twice a month in season.
This is the story Geezer Jock did in March, 2023 on Myrle and her foundation Throwing and Growing.
This is the shot put form (from an earlier meet) that helped Mensey set an American record at the USATF Masters Outdoors Championships last weekend.
Myrle with throw officials in Sacramento. It is crucial they do their jobs well because when Myrle makes a world-record heave it has to stand up on every technical level, not just distance. Photo courtesy USATF Masters.

Thanks for this spotlight on Myrle. She a true competitor and a great athlete regardless of her age. Her throws records set a high standard for those who follow her. As an athlete AND an official, I appreciate the mention of the terrific crew of throws official at Sacramento. Without good officials, record performances cannot be ratified.
