1. There is nothing Tiny about her.

Geezer Jock is going to track down Madeline 'Tiny' Cazel in 2024. It doesn't appear she is retiring at 86 so we are going to get more of her story.

For now...

In December, at the Florida Senior Games, she became the first U.S. woman over 85 to throw the discus over 60 feet when she heaved it 61.31 feet. Flo Meiler had the U.S. masters mark at 55 feet, one inch. The world record of 69 feet, 6 inches was set by a woman from Brazil in 2023.

That capped a 2023 outdoors season where Tiny ranked No. 1 in the U.S. (W85-89) in the 50, the long jump, and discus and No. 2 in the javelin, 100, and shot put. You can find her profile on www.mastersrankings.com.

Tiny competes for The Villages, those rabid sportsmen and sportswomen from the central Florida community. Jeff Shain of The Villages newspaper said athletes from The Villages won at least 385 medals, including 207 gold, at the 10-day Florida Senior Games in November/December.

I frequently run into people who have moved to The Villages from some other part of the country, or from somewhere else in Florida, because of the athletics.

2. Tips on being older and better.

"The biggest mistake that most athletes make is they train too easy on their hard days, and too hard on their easy days."

Many of you know the book "Play On" by Jeff Bercovici. It is a collection of profiles of successful older athletes.

Here is a link to a Q&A that boils down many of the strategies Bercovici discovered. It's worth a quick study.

3. 78-year old powerlifter talks the upside.

This guy won't intimidate you. He will give you reason to lift weights, even modestly. Richard's blood pressure went from 140 over 80+ to 112 over 60. This clip is a TV news story out of Hawaii. (Skip through the You Tube ad intro).

Geezer Jock is FREE. Please consider supporting me because there is value in storytelling. I have been telling stories almost 50 years for newspapers and magazines and websites worldwide. I'm finally halfway decent at it. As always, "If you're not buying what I'm selling, it's my fault not yours."
