It's not like some early December NBA games where there is a free path to the basket. The Geezer Jocks stick their nose in there to take away a clean shot. Photo Courtesy National Senior Games.
Some quick notes from the National Senior Games:
*Californian Colleen Barney, 57, smoked the field in the 200 (W55-59). Following a sporadic 1½ years after tearing her hamstring tendon halfway off the bone, Barney pumped her fist as she glanced at the board and the 29.83. There was a lot of daylight between her and second-place finisher Christy Marinaro (32.48).
*Barney, Andrea Collier, Neringa Jakstiene, and Joy Upshaw set the National Senior Games record in the 4x100 in W55 at 56.04.
*Barbara Warren of Charleston, West Virginia (W75-79) competed with a new left knee just four months after surgery and was a delightful presence all around the track this week.
*A man in the 80-84 800 meter race fell flat on the track 60 meters from the finish line Thursday. He picked himself up and finished the race before the medical team put him on a stretcher at the finish. He left the medical tent smiling and hitched a ride out of there on a golf cart.
*The Celebration of Athletes was hosted by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night with a Parade of Athletes before the Pirates vs. San Francisco Giants game.
*Here is a link to the economic impact of the games on Pittsburgh: $30 million.
*A lot of grumbling here about how hard it is to get around Pittsburgh. The big city has a lot to do culturally, but my feeling is a lot of athletes want to compete, not sight-see.Traffic will be an issue around the pool this weekend with a key parking deck closed. But...it's a great town.
