Fighting Ageism One Photo At A Time

My goal at Geezer Jock is to one day be half as good writing about older athletes as Alex Rotas and Rob Jerome are at shooting them with a camera.

I am awe-struck at the talent of these two photographers. That's Alex in the picture above.

Please look at this Vimeo of her explaining why she does what she does. I think it will inspire you.

And check out her work online here. The expressions she gets of people as they compete are wonderful.

I used one of Rob's pictures on a former Olympian, high jumper Jim Barrineau, and it is at the end of this story. I mean, just dazzling.

When the pandemic disrupted the Masters Track & Field circuit, Rob connected athletes to their passion with his photos. There were very few meets, but he was there reporting with his camera. The community of Geezer Jocks were engaged and cohesive.

Here is some of his work.

"New Yorker Rob Jerome is the apple of American masters' eye," says journalist and masters track supporter Ken Stone. "After cashing out of Wall Street, he's put all his stock in shooting age-group track stars at almost every major international meet — and many national championships. While his subjects sweat and suffer, Rob is the picture of cool and calm.

"For a decade, he's also posted hundreds (thousands?) of his track photos on Facebook, sharing his admiration of our niche sport. He does it to elevate us elders, but never himself."

Thank you, Pat! People need to read your words…and “get after it.”

Drop the ‘isms’; get up and get after it everyday; ACTIONS drive change in perceptions and attitudes; ‘excuse’ language perpetuates whining and complaining. Touché to Geezer Jock for their contribution to changing the way and the pace at which we age! 👍🏔

Is competition healthy after sixty? For many athletes, yes: the right challenge builds strength, purpose, friendship, and smarter self-knowledge daily.
