Don't Let It See You Sweat. Find A Way.

Cupcake, our dog, looks forward. I need to, as well. Moments later, she was in that pond.

By Ray Glier

I thought I was going to quit the Geezer Jock newsletter this week. Marketing and writing  is a challenge because of the fatigue associated with the disease I have. It's hard to acquire and manage video, which every site should have these days.

My newsletter open rate was 70 percent, now it is 57 percent and that is discouraging, too, but like I always say, "If you're not buying what I'm selling, it's my fault, not yours."

And then I started talking to Geezer Jocks, which gave me reassurance. I also stayed outside to dig in the dirt and pull weeds and, odd as it seems, that can lift you up. I came out of that cruddy place of uncertainty. Geezer Jocks and dirt are two of the medicines I use to fight the crud of ALS.

It's also Mother's Day Week. What kind of ungratefulness would quitting show my wife, the mother of our two boys, and my mom, the mother of 11 kids?

So, I didn't prepare a new story for readers this week because I thought I was done. I finally did some interviews, which was a huge help, but I didn't want to rush the wordsmithing, or facts, and give people a subpar product today.

In keeping with the imperative tone of Geezer Jock, I do have a tip this week.

Don't feed a disease, like ALS. I was warned by a researcher about the mechanics of the disease this week. Don't let it see you sweat. It's a thing. She said the disease can rev up when it sees an opening in your psyche. I'm 44 months into it and still driving better than 99 percent of the people out there. I'm walking, talking....breathing. The docs all said that's good. My focus should be: What I can do.

Still, it's very, very hard not to keep adding daily fuel, like despair, to a disease, any disease. Many of you know that. You are coping with something. I'm not the only one wearing a life jacket.

Don't pile on crud. That's the tip. It's ok to be human, but don't snap. Snap back.

My right arm hurts to type and it's no fun dictating to the AI transcriber after 51 years of banging on a keyboard. My increased fatigue will probably keep me from the National Senior Games in July and that is despair in spades. I hide out a lot. Cramps in my legs wake me up.

Much worse is happening to people all over the world.

My tip? Find a way.

Thank you for the support.

Good morning, Ray. Thank you for your personal writing. I was wondering how you were coping these days, so I am glad you caught us up.

What would Jim say to you now, I wonder? I enjoyed seeing the two of you interact, so I know he would give you the greatest of support. Thank you, by the way, for supporting him through my fundraising.

I hate to know your fatigue will keep you from attending the Senior Games. I would like to offer my support in attending with you, if having a companion would be helpful. It looks to be an amazing event. Please reach out if having a team would help you feel able to attend. I am sure I can rally a friend or two to come along.

Hey Ray! Thanks for not giving up. Your newsletter is inspiring and helpful to so many Geezer Jocks! As the famous basketball coach at my alma mater, Jim Valvano of NC State, said in his battle with cancer: “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!”

Ray – I’m echoing the other comments as to how motivational and inspiring your posting is! Given that you wrote it in the same style with which you have always written (concisely and meaningfully, among other great writing attributes), going all the way back to when you very first started “honing your craft”, is very encouraging as to how courageously you’re dealing with your situation. Just reading the other comments, showing the love for you and how much you and your writing mean to so many is incredibly heartwarming and uplifting. George Bailey has nothing on you, my friend! Thanks for the tip and the memorable advice – really made my day.

Thank you for all the comments and support. I shared some of my story this week because I wanted to give a reason—-not an alibi—-why I don’t engage more with readers and take Geezer Jock to another level. It’s gratifying to know you all got my back. This newsletter has been all about giving one valuable tip each week. I can do that writing the stories of people I grew up playing games with.

Ray,
So sorry to hear that you were considering quitting, giving in to the disease that is trying to to take your body. For those of us who have met you, either through your phone interviews, in person at a meet, or both, know your love for the sport, and the geezers that take part in it.
I don’t think anyone would slight you if you had to cut back on your interviews and articles. At our age the realities of aging and health, are upon us all. Don’t hesitate to share your battle with ALS with us, so we can show our support for you, in anyway we can. Bless you sir, for your continued support for all of us out on the oval.

Thank you for your newsletter and inspiration and keeping going! I love geezer jock!!! Sometimes I only open 1 in 4 or 5. It’s not out of lack of interest but things happening in my own life. Just seeing the name, geezer jock, in my mailbox gives me a burst of joy, just that it exists, especially in today’s world. Thank you so much. Your efforts inspire, encourage and bring positivity to tough times.

Hi Ray—I am so sorry for what you are dealing with. I applaud you for facing it with such intensity and drive. I have loved your articles for years—so well written and researched. Highlighting people and events I might never have known about. You are a true leader and spokesman for masters track and field. Don’t let those numbers get to you about percentages who open your newsletter. You are doing quality work—believe in your mission. I needed your message today as intense migraines have sidelined me and kept me from work and training. You put things in vivid perspective. I will not feed this condition any more. I hope you don’t either. Much love and blessings for you. You will be in my prayers daily. -Sheri

Thanks for sharing your frustration Ray. You face a challenge each and every day. Your courage is an inspiration to me……to all of us. You go beyond the typical trials that most of us Geezerjocks must contend. You are a gifted writer and story teller. Your ability to take rather dry facts and somehow see an inspirational story is truly a gift. I hope that I am able to read many more such stories for a very long time.

Love and respect my brother….I have been susceptible and guilty of those very same tendencies. Seeking meaning and desiring new challenges, while giving into the DESIRE to just, wait. Perhaps this has been one of my biggest challenges. The void caused by different losses, (friends, abilities status and strength) also weighs heavily on me. BUT in YOUR sharing I have realized I do have choices and not merely that of being RESIGNED to waiting.

Today I will get up, walk around the development and do 10 air squats, while being vocally grateful that I can do these things and attribute today’s actions to Ray Glier, the original Geezer Jock!

Thanks again Ray, prayers and respect. Mike Lavigna

From the very first time I met you, Ray, you have been an inspiration to me and others alike. Your coverage of the athletes be it the winners or the participants have been moving and motivating for us all. Do what you can do as every word, every keyboard strike and every Interview you do is so much appreciated and valued. Ray, thank you for reaching out to all of your devoted readers, of which I am one. I’m on the board of the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation and am working with the National Senior Games as well. I look forward to your thoughtful interviews and insights from aging and inspirational athletes. As a physician, I understand your personal medical journey. I consider you an extraordinary professional and human being. I hope you continue your writing because I have learned over the years that if you wake up every day with meaning and purpose in life it fuels you with energy and continues to drive your touching other people’s lives with inspiration. All of us care about you and want to keep hearing from you. You are as unique and amazing as each of the athletes you highlight. And we’re all honored you gift us with their stories. And yours.

You don’t know me, but I love you, Ray. So glad you didn’t quit. I’m dreading the day that you do. I haven’t been opening most of my emails lately, but I always open your newsletter. Don’t feel bad that your open rate is down… I’m assuming like me, people are overwhelmed by the current political climate, and getting inundated with emails of petitions to sign. I am “only” 47, and not really an athlete, but wish I was. I trail run and work unloading trailers, and I can outwork most of the boys in their early twenties… But the athletes you cover, and you yourself are way tougher than me. You are all humbling and inspiring. I love the sense of community in Master’s athletes, and hope I can be half as badass as you guys are when I grow up. I’m so glad you have the love and support of your family and your doggo. That’s what really matters. I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with nighttime leg cramps on top of everything else. I myself have had severe unrelenting leg cramps all the way up to my hip that woke me up all night. Muscle relaxers at bedtime have helped tremendously, but I know how hellish that is. I’ve had a lot of unpleasantness in my life, and your newsletter has been a bright spot, so thank you.
